about

Our mandolinist Mike Bell wrote this tune to lyrics by Claire Tran in 2014, in fondest memory of Pete Seeger, who passed that year. We are releasing this live recording we made that year to honor Pete's 100th birthday. Our cellist, Mary Gaines, sings lead.

lyrics

Good Old Pete

– words by Claire Tran and music by Mike Bell

Who’s gonna weave the rainbow, with heart and hand and mind
Who’s gonna weave the rainbow, with colors intertwined
What happened to that rainbow, we had our hearts set on
We’re gonna miss that rainbow, our Good Old Pete is gone

Who’s gonna tell the captain that we’re stuck in the mud
Who’s gonna tell the captain we’re sick of all the blood
Who’s gonna tell the captain when he keeps pushin’ on
Who’s gonna be the brave one, our Good Old Pete is gone

I’d better sing, you’d better sing
We’d better sing this song
Cause when we sing these good old songs
Our Pete keeps singing on

Who’s gonna tell the bankers give up your marble floors
Who’s gonna tell the bankers we’re coming for your doors
Who’s gonna tell the bankers we’re not the ones in debt
We’re gonna tell the bankers those profits are our sweat

chorus

Who’s gonna stop the pipeline tearing up our good brown earth
Who’s gonna stop the pipeline and protect our water’s worth
Who’s gonna stop the pipeline for the one blue sky above
We’re gonna stop the pipeline for children that we love

chorus

When you find your voice dear the battle is half won
When you find your voice dear then we’ll have some fun
In you want that rainbow then put it in your song
If you want that rainbow we’ve got to sing along
